Activating xp after a system repair

Who is it for

windows xp has crashed and you ran a system repair.  The system repair fixed the issue but when you try to log in you get the message “This copy of Windows must be activated before you can log on.” the problem is, how can you activate windows without being able to log in first!

Why do you need to activate xp after a system repair

Activation helps verify that your copy of Windows is genuine and that it has not been used on more computers than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow. In this way, activation helps prevent software counterfeiting. With an activated copy of Windows, you’ll be able to use every feature of Windows. And in this case, it will let you get past the login screen

  1. Restart computer, press F8, choose SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT.
  2. login to an account with admin rights (administrator)
  3. At command prompt – type taskmgr, this will bring up task manager.
  4. In task manager click on File -> New Task (run)
  5. Type in exactly: rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk (and click OK)
(note: one space, after “rundll32.exe ” also the Oo are two letter o’s in “oobe”; capitals and comma are important)
